How Seeking to Become a Better Writer Changed My Perspective
To be a writer is no simple task. I began writing in 2017 after hearing about an opportunity to write for a publication called Odyssey. I haven’t written much before that date so I had no idea if I can be good at it. The only source of motivation was my high school teacher who once deeply admired my essay. This meant that I must have potential as a writer, somehow. I also equally questioned my potential since anyone can write a really good essay once in a while. The only way to find out was to actually start writing. And so I began.
My first articles were about feminism, and the struggles of college life. I was part of a feminist club, navigating college life, and being immersed in my unique surroundings. They were the raw materials that I began writing with. Then my interests gradually widened as I studied more, and wrote more. I now have published articles on topics like mental health, climate change, and technology.
I began my writing journey with a curiosity to see if I would be good at it. I ended up discovering that writing isn’t about being good or bad, but it‘s a skill that is developed over time, like most other pursuits.
